Craddock
Due to the large number of Craddock families, many sharing common
names for their offspring, each Craddock individual is given a
reference number to help identify them uniquely through the returns.
In the 1841 census there were 3 CRADDOCK households -

This is probably the Anthony Craddock baptized 6 Nov 1824 in
Redmire. There is some uncertainty about the parents in this
baptism. The child is either the illegitimate son of John WILLIS and
Mary CRADDOCK, or John Willis CRADDOCK and his wife Mary. His location
in 1841 is unknown.

The full name of Ann (23) is unknown, nor do I know when they (22)
married, or when, although the GRO marriage indexes have a marriage
for an unidentified Anthony in the Dec quarter 1858, Leyburn
Registration District. It seems likely that he married in Ann’s
home village.

Maud May and Violet were the children of Thomas CRADDOCK and his wife
Elizabeth (nee HAW). Although Thomas was born in Redmire and was part
of this extended family, he does not appear in earlier census records
as he and his parents lived in various other places including Preston
under Scar. I have not yet established the exact relationship of this
family to Elizabeth WALKER. In 1861 and 1881, Thomas and Elizabeth
were living in Leyburn, so it is possible that they are also there in
1871. Later records give the birthplace of Maud and Violet as Leyburn,
not Redmire as stated in this census record.

Leadley Craddock is noted as being blind in this census return:
Name | Relationship | Age | Occupation | Birthplace |
Thomas CRADOCK (3) | Head, Married | 72 | Leadminer | Redmire |
Leadley CRADOCK | Wife, Married | 77 | | Pocklington |
|
This is Thomas who in previous censuses, was married to Jane KIRBY who
was born in Pocklington, and in the 1871 census gave her age as 66
years. I have been unable to find a GRO death registration for Jane,
nor a burial in the parish register, nor a marriage to
Leadley. However, both Jane and Leadley give their birthplace as
Pocklington and their ages are similar. It is possible that Jane and
Leadley are the same person although prior to 1881 Thomas’s wife is
always Jane and from 1881 to her death she is Leadley. This should be
investigated further.

I have been unable to locate the whereabouts of Anthony (22) who
appears to be away from home at this time.
William Anthony Robert (26) disappears from Redmire after this, but
appears in Somerset in 1901 census (RG13 2330 45) with wife and
family.

Robert CRADOCK (34) | Son | 1m | | Redmire |
|
This is Thomas (13) son of Robert (10) and Eden Edith METCALF.
In 1871 census the family was in Bainbridge
By 1881 census the family was back in Redmire and had lost their 3 eldest children in less than 2 months -
- Anthony buried 29 Jan 1877, aged 11yrs
- Robert buried 23 Feb 1877, aged 13yrs, scaletina
- Mary Ann buried 18 Mar 1877, aged 8 yrs, scaletina
- Thomas (33) was baptized 22 Sep 1879, son of Thomas (a miner) and Jane
- Robert (34) was baptized 18 Apr 1881, son of Thomas (a miner) and Jane
Thomas and Jane left Redmire before 1891 census and are found in
Thornton Rust Yks with two children in 1901 census.

William CRADOCK (9) | Head, Unmarried | 41 | Farmer of 38 acres | Redmire |
Jane CRADOCK (15) | Sister, Unmarried | 38 | Housekeeper | Redmire |

These are the children of Anthony (6) who has since died. William has
given up lead mining and taken up farming like his father before his
death. However, the acreage has grown from 6 to 38.

Robert CRADOCK (35) | Son | 3 | | Redmire |
|
This is Anthony (16) son of Robert (10) and Eden Edith. There is a
marriage in the GRO marriage index for an Anthony CRADDOCK and Esther
WEBSTER Mar qtr 1871 Richmond Yks which appears to be this couple.
- Edith Hannah (34) birth registration Jun qtr 1875 Stockton.
- Robert (35) baptized 24 Sep 1877, son of Anthony (railway signalman) and Esther.
In the 1901 census Anthony, Esther, and Robert are in Leyburn; Edith
Hannah is a dressmaker in Witton le Wear and living with a 17yr old
John, a railway signalman, who is possibly another brother.
Most CRADDOCK families had moved away by now as the mining industry
was beginning to close down in the area. Only two households
remaining.
