William Topham was born 1765 in Askrigg. In 1787, he began service with the 36th foot (Herefordshire) regiment, and then the 3rd royal veteran battalion until his discharge in 1814 as a Chelsea Pensioner. Presumably he would have been involved in the war with France at the time.

William married Mary Storey 12 August 1818, although there is no Mary Storey baptized about 1776 in Redmire or Castle Bolton. The nearest would be Mary, daughter of Matthew Storey and Ann (nee Stoddart) born 8 October 1780.

William and Mary had two children baptized in Castle Bolton, at both of which William was described as a soldier:

  1. Ann: baptized 24 October 1819
  2. Henry: bapized 2 September 1821
