Kildon

The Kildon family surname varies in both the census and the parish registers between Kildon, Kilding, Kilden, and Hildon. We use Kildon for the chapter title, as the early references after Joseph arrived in Castle Bolton are Kildon, but by the time of his death, and his grandchildren's births, Kilding seems the chosen spelling.

1851 Census

In November 1845, Joseph Kildon married Elizabeth Storey. By 1851, they have two children:

Joseph was of Aysgarth when he married. Elizabeth was baptized 2 June 1822, the daughter of Henry Storey and Alice, nee Fowler.

Henry and Alice married 27 July 1873, Henry being of Scruton at the time.

Joseph and Elizabeth's son Henry has also married, and in 1881 is living on Railway Street in Leyburn with his wife Isabella (nee Blades) and two children.

Joseph's memorial in Redmire reads:

In loving memory of Joseph Kilding of Castle Bolton who died 27 April 1882 aged 63 years. Also Elizabeth wife of the above who died 26 January 1895 aged 72 years.
