Ralph and Margaret's daughter Martha died in 1845, and was buried in
Redmire 21 December 1845 aged 7. Their new child is Ann, baptized 12
May 1844.
The younger Margaret is probably the unfortunate victim recorded in
the March 1852 Hang West Petty Sessions, where one George Ripley
Peverell of Richmond, whitesmith, was committed to York Castle for
trial, accused of assault with intent to commit a rape on one Margaret
Horn of Castle Bolton.

Joseph Horn was baptized 9 January 1814, son of Robert Horn and
Elizabeth, nee Allen, whom we saw in 1841 living with his widowed
mother. In February 1842, banns were read for his marriage to Mary
Peacock, the daughter of James Peacock and Elizabeth, nee Wensley.
Before 1851, Joseph and Mary had the following children:
- Elizabeth: baptized 24 September 1843
- Jane: (no baptism found)
- Robert: (no baptism found)
- James: (no baptism found)
Next we see the widow of William, although there is no burial
record at Redmire for him:

Ralph we saw in the 1841 census living with his parents Thomas and
Ann. In June 1850, he married Elizabeth Sarginson, daughter of
William Sarginson and Elizabeth (nee Horn). Elizabeth was baptized 9
January 1827 at West Witton Methodist chapel (born 1 December 1826,
Carperby).
Ralph and Elizabeth's daughter Ann was baptized shortly after the
census, on 12 July 1852.
Next, John Horn is at his Aunt Ann's house:

the 1841 census with his parents.
Three generations of Horns are living at the next house:

HORN Elizabeth | Head, Widow | 61 | Farmer 4 Acres | Feetham |
HORN Thomas | Son, Unmarried | 28 | Leadminer | Castle Bolton |
HORN Thomas | Grandson | 7 | | Winston, DUR |

Elizabeth (nee Allen) is the widow of Robert. The young Thomas is the
son of Robert Horn and Margaret, nee Wright, baptized at Winston, DUR
14 January 1844. Margaret Wright was of Easby, according to the banns
read in Redmire cum Bolton in September 1841.
Name | Relationship | Age | Occupation | Birthplace |
HORN Jane | Head, Married | 43 | Grocer, Draper | Castle Bolton |
HORN John | Nephew, Unmarried | 27 | Draper | Castle Bolton |
|
It's not clear which Jane and John the above refers to.
Finally for 1851, at Castle Bank, Mary Horn is still in service:
Name | Relationship | Age | Occupation | Birthplace |
ROBINSON Ralph | Head, Married | 71 | Farmer 1200 Acres employing 4 men and 6 women | Aysgarth Parish |

|
Mary was the youngest daughter of William Horn and Mary, nee Calvert. We
saw her, as acting head of household, in 1841.
The first household in 1861 is headed by Elizabeth:
Name | Relationship | Age | Occupation | Birthplace |
HORN Elizabeth | Head, Widow | 71 | | Feetham |
HORN Thomas | Son, Married | 38 | Leadminer | Castle Bolton |

HORN William | Grandson | 3m | | Castle Bolton |
HORN Thomas | Nephew, Unmarried | 17 | Leadminer | Winston, DUR |
|
Elizabeth (nee Allen), the widow of Robert, is the mother of Thomas
Horn, whom we saw living together in 1851. Jane is nee Dunn, baptized
25 December 1832 in Grinton, daughter of John Dunn and Jane, nee
Musgrove. Banns for their marriage were read in Bolton cum Redmire in
June 1852. Their children are:
- Elizabeth: baptized 19 March 1854
- John: baptized 29 June 1856
- Robert: baptized 12 December 1858 OR 2 October 1859
- William: baptized 5 May 1861
Thomas, born in Winston, is Elizabeth's grandson, Thomas' nephew,
as seen on the 1851 census.
William and Ann have had some children since 1851:
Name | Relationship | Age | Occupation | Birthplace |
HORN William | Head | 41 | Leadminer | Castle Bolton |
HORN Ann | Wife | 40 | | Swaledale |

HORN Thomas | Head, Widower | 61 | Lead Ore Carrier | Castle Bolton |
HORN Ann | Daughter | 18 | | Castle Bolton |
HORN William | Grandson | 8 | | Castle Bolton |
|
Thomas' wife Elizabeth, nee Peacock, died in 1857 and was buried in
Redmire 29 November 1857. Ann is Thomas and Elizabeth's youngest
daughter. William is the illegitimate son of Dorothy, the third
daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth, baptized 26 September 1852.
At the Leyburn bastardy sessions in August 1852, Dorothy named
the father as Christopher Heslop of Castle Bolton.
Name | Relationship | Age | Occupation | Birthplace |
HORN Jane | Head, Unmarried | 28 | Farm Labourer | Castle Bolton |
HORN John | Son | 1 | | Castle Bolton |
|
John above is probably an illegitimate child of Jane. Although
too early for the above John, one Jane Horn of Castle Bolton appeared
at the bastardy sessions in March 1857, naming Matthew Metcalfe of
Askrigg, drainer, as father. Again, in September 1859, a Jane
of Castle Bolton named William Peacock, labourer of Castle Bolton
as father.
Name | Relationship | Age | Occupation | Birthplace |
HORN Elizabeth | Head, Widow | 45 | Schoolmistress | Castle Bolton |
|
It is unclear which Elizabeth this is.
Joseph and Mary have two new children:

Mary Horn was baptized 18 April 1853, and Joseph Ralph Horn on 11 July 1859.
Name | Relationship | Age | Occupation | Birthplace |
HORN Jane | Head, Unmarried | 50 | Grocer | Castle Bolton |
|
This is probably the same Jane from the 1851 census, although there she
was 43 and married.
Ralph and Elizabeth have had several more children since 1851:
Name | Relationship | Age | Occupation | Birthplace |
HORN Ralph | Head | 38 | Carter of Quarry Stones | Castle Bolton |

HORN Martha | Servant, Unmarried | 14 | General Servant | Castle Bolton |
|
Martha is an illegitimate daughter of Jane Horn (which Jane Horn is
unclear). She was baptized 3 October 1858.
At the Leyburn bastardy sessions, March 1857, Jane named the father as
Matthew Metcalfe of Askrigg, a drainer. There is also another for Jane,
September 1859, naming William Peacock, labourer of Castle Bolton.
Which one relates to Martha is unclear.

MASON Henry | Head, Unmarried | 58 | Farmer 25 Acres | Castle Bolton |
MASON Jane | Sister, Unmarried | 65 | | Castle Bolton |
HORN Jane | Niece, Unmarried | 15 | | Redmire |
|
This Jane was born 15 July 1855, and baptized at the Methodist chapel
the same day. Jane was the daughter of Christopher Horn and Jane, nee
Mason, and was actually Henry's Great-niece, Jane Mason's parents
being Robert Mason (Henry's older brother) and Alice, nee Warriner.
Another Mason / Horn connection appears in the next household:
Name | Relationship | Age | Occupation | Birthplace |
MASON George | Head, Married | 37 | Labourer | Worton |
MASON Dorothy | Wife, Married | 38 | | Castle Bolton |
HORN William | Wife's Son, Unmarried | 18 | Labourer | Castle Bolton |

William Horn we saw in 1861 living with his aunt Ann and grandfather
Thomas, and in 1871 he's now living with his mother Dorothy's new
family.
Next, a Ralph missing from 1861 has returned to the village:
Name | Relationship | Age | Occupation | Birthplace |
HORN Ralph | Head, Married | 36 | Leadminer | Castle Bolton |

HORN Ralph | Son | 5 | Scholar | Castle Bolton |
HORN Heslop | Son | 3 | | Castle Bolton |
HORN Christopher | Son | 1 | | Castle Bolton |
|
Ralph is a son of Ralph Horn and Margaret, nee Storey, last seen in
the village census in 1851. His new wife is Alice Heslop, baptized 2
July 1837, the daughter of William Heslop and Rebecca Clarkson. As
such, she's an aunt of the William Horn from the previous household,
being the brother of the alleged father, Christopher Heslop.
Ralph and Alice had banns read in Bolton cum Redmire in October 1859,
although it is unknown where they actually married.
Their children to date are:
- Margaret: baptized 26 February 1860
- Sarah: baptized 8 December 1861
- William: baptized 9 August 1863
- Ralph: baptized 29 April 1866
- Heslop: baptized 10 May 1868
- Christopher: baptized 17 April 1870
Ralph died in 1873, and was buried in Redmire 3 March 1873. His widow
Alice subsequently remarried to Anthony Horner, and is seen as Alice
Horner in 1881.
Ralph and Elizabeth have had four more children, bringing their total
to nine (although Elizabeth was shortly to become pregnant with the
tenth, born in April 1872):
Name | Relationship | Age | Occupation | Birthplace |
HORN Ralph | Head, Married | 48 | Farmer 3 Acres | Castle Bolton |

|
The new children are:
- John Ralph: baptized 15 June 1862
- James William: (no baptism found)
- Jeremiah: (no baptism found)
- Robert: born 26 April 1867
Joseph Horn died since the last census, leaving his widow Mary:
Name | Relationship | Age | Occupation | Birthplace |
HORN Mary | Head, Widow | 54 | Labourer | Castle Bolton |
HORN Robert | Son, Unmarried | 23 | Leadminer | Castle Bolton |
HORN Joseph | Son | 11 | Scholar | Castle Bolton |
|
Joseph was buried in Redmire 8 February 1867, aged 53. There was an
inquest into his death held on the previous day at the house of John
Storey. According to the statements of his son Robert, and James
Rider, Joseph was working at Bolton Park Mine in a craggy place and
asked his son to get a two foot stemple and a candle. When Robert
returned, Joseph had been crushed by a stone about 6 foot by 4 foot,
probably from working too far without putting wood in.
Catharine Horn, having married Henry Craddock, has her
sister and nephew living with them in 1871:
Name | Relationship | Age | Occupation | Birthplace |
CRADOCK Henry | Head, Married | 58 | Farmer, Carrier | Grinton |
CRADOCK Catharine | Wife, Married | 49 | | Castle Bolton |
CRADOCK Henry | Son | 14 | Labourer | Castle Bolton |

CRADOCK Ann | Daughter | 6 | Scholar | Castle Bolton |
HORN Ann | Sister in law, Unmarried | 28 | | Castle Bolton |
HORN Thomas | Sister in law's Son | 7m | | Castle Bolton |
|
Ann is the daughter (as is Catharine) of Thomas Horn and Elizabeth,
nee Peacock. Her illegitimate son Thomas was baptized 31 January
1871. Nothing is know of his father.
The next household contains a varied-surname collection of Horns:
Name | Relationship | Age | Occupation | Birthplace |

|
Margaret Horn, nee Storey, is the widow of Ralph, last seen on the
1851 census of the village. Tomison Beckwith is her daughter,
Thomasin Horn, now wife of John Beckwith (and mother of the above
William Beckwith, aged 8 months).
Ralph and Thomas are both illegitimate children of Tomasina. Ralph
baptized 9 March 1862, and Thomas 24 September 1865. In May 1864, at
the Leyburn bastardy sessions, Tomasina claimed John Dixon, a servant
from Carperby, was the father (presumably of Thomas).

this census. Thomas and Jane have had four more children since 1861:
- Thomas: baptized 25 February 1866
- Christopher: baptized 25 February 1866
- Frederick: baptized 19 July 1868
- Jane: baptized 23 March 1873
William Horn has died, leaving his widow Ann:

last census on 21 September 1876, aged 18. He was buried at Redmire
on the 24 September 1876.
