John Middlemiss was the son of James Middlemiss of Preston and wife Elizabeth. John married Jane Calvert in February 1865 in Redmire: she was baptized 8 June 1845, the illegitimate daughter of Ann. Their children shown on the census are:

Annie Elizabeth: baptized 19 May 1867
Margaret Alice: baptized 29 August 1869

One more child, Marib Jane, was baptized at Redmire 5 May 1872. By 1881, the family was living at 58 Manchester Road in Burnley, LAN, where John was a butcher and 13 year old Annie was a cotton weaver. "Marib" was not living with them, but a 3 year old son James W., born Redmire, is there.
