Other Things

John and Thomas Lambert continued as Lead Miners to the "bitter end". They worked a level known as Lambert Level.

George Harker (a railway engineer from Darlington) started Harkers Level mid 19thC. It runs as a crosscut due north for 400 yards before it cut the vein. The vein runs east to west. In the 1880's the Cradock brothers took over the mine. One brother lived in Stockton the other had an ironmongery in Leyburn. It was this time that John and Thomas Lambert were at the mine. They were working in the east end of the vein, then they drove a crosscut to try another vein further north. This area was roughly under the road to Reeth, halfway between the cattle grid and Apedale road end.

The mine surveyor or agent Simon Cherry from Fremington had noticed a discontinuity in the strata just south of the allotment wall so about 1900 Lamberts level was started to test this area. The level was like Harkers driven at a right angle to the side of the gill and cut a small string after about 100 yards. To the best of knowledge, it was unproductive and was abandoned about 1902.

John Lambert wrote to Simon Cherry,

Mr Cherry Redmire April 19th

Just a line to let you know how our place looks, the leede in the Black is about 18 ins wide with ore, and vein looks very well in the Black it hitches about 4 foot on the South and has got it's South side down, it will be two or three days before we can sea into the grit.

Yours truly John Lambert

Thomas Lambert of Redmire to Simon Cherry. 1898

7th March 1898.

you will be aware that my father is working with me now. We are going on with the forehead very well, we are driving in the Red beds, it is very craggy at present, we have a firm side on the north side and taking the room off the south side, we have not had it quick lately.
