1841 Census

The first Heslop family is headed by John:

John Heslop was baptized 13 October 1814 of John Heslop and Margaret, nee Lambert, of Low Bolton. His parents must have been young at their marriage, as their marriage entry in the Wensley register for 2 December 1813 is by license, with consent of parents.

On 29 June 1840 at Aysgarth, John (described as farmer of Low Bolton) married Hannah Waller of Thoresby, daughter of Richard, farmer. Hannah was baptized at Aysgarth 15 February 1818, named in the register as Annas.

Their servant, Jeremiah Richardson Heslop, was son of William Heslop and Rebecca, nee Clarkson, baptized in Redmire 23 January 1825.

William was the son of William Heslop and Rebecca, nee Clarkson, baptized in Redmire 13 October 1822. In November 1848 he married Sarah Lumley, the daughter of John Lumley and Ann (nee Sedgwick), baptized in West Witton 25 January 1824. Their daughter, Ann, was baptized in Redmire 11 February 1850.

John is the son of William Heslop and Rebecca (nee Clarkson) of Low Bolton, eldest brother to the above William, and was baptized 13 August 1820. He married Mary Todd of Richmond in December 1849. Their daughter Sarah was baptized in Redmire 25 August 1850.

Jeremiah was born 26 May 1786, and baptized in Castle Bolton on 29 May. He was the son of John Heslop and Mary, nee Richardson.

This Jeremiah is the Jeremiah Richardson Heslop we saw in 1841: in 1851 he was living with his father in Castle Bolton. Jeremiah married Margaret Dinsdale in February 1852, the daughter of James Dinsdale and Alice, nee Pickersgill, baptized 4 March 1821.

Rebecca Heslop, nee Clarkson, is the widow of William Heslop whom she married 4 April 1820, and mother to the above Jeremiah Richardson Heslop. In 1851, she was visiting the Robinson family in Askrigg, and had moved to Castle Bolton by the time of the 1871 census, and died in 1873, being buried in Redmire 10 April 1873.

This is the last time we see John and Hannah on the Redmire census. Hannah died in 1874, and was buried in Redmire 6 May 1874. John is at the Manor House, Harmby in 1881, a farmer of 300 acres. He died in 1886 and was buried in Redmire 3 February 1886.

Jeremiah and Margaret have had one more child, Jeremiah, baptized in Redmire 31 May 1863. Their daughter Rebecca died in 1880 and was buried 4 February 1880 in Redmire. The family moved to Castle Bolton by 1881, where Jeremiah Sr. was a shepherd. Jeremiah Sr. died in 1889, buried 19 June 1889. Margaret is listed on the 1891 census in Castle Bolton, and died in 1899, aged 78, buried 9 January 1899. Jeremiah Jr. reappears in Redmire in 1901.

Jane is the widow of Christopher Heslop, a joiner. She was born Jane Thompson in Carperby, the daughter of Anthony and Rachel, and baptized 22 November 1835. She married Christopher 5 March 1859 in Aysgarth.

They had the following children baptized in Redmire:

We haven't seen William in Redmire since 1861, aged 4, the son of Jeremiah Richardson Heslop and Margaret, nee Dinsdale. His brother Jeremiah was last seen in the village in 1871.

William married Alice Sarginson Horn, 7 May 1899. Alice was the daughter of Ralph Horn and Elizabeth, nee Sarginson, born 11 January 1860 and baptized at Redmire methodist chapel 15 March 1860.

Jeremiah is buried in Redmire: "In loving memory of Jeremiah R. Heslop died 29 February 1931 aged 68 years."
