The first Storey family is that of Matthew and wife Sarah (Collinson) who were married 12 Sep 1836.

The next family is that of George and Frances (Walton) m. 24 Nov 1835.

1851 Census

The first family we see listed for 1851 is that of George and Frances:

Next comes Matthew, now widowed, living with daughter Dorothy.

Another William, son of William and Ann of Castle Bolton, was living with a Thompson family as shoemaker's apprentice.

1861 Census

The first Storey to appear in 1861 census of the village, is Frances, dau of George and Frances. As for so many girls at the time she was lucky to find domestic employment nearby.

Matthew Storey (who seems to have gained more than 10 years since the last census) has his now married daughter Dorothy living with him.

George and Frances had one more additon to their own family, plus a grandson.

Henry and Elizabeth have had four additions to their family since 1851, and are living at the Brick Shades (aka Tile Sheds) This is along the Church Lane, beyond the Church, close to Woodend Farm.

1871 Census

Henry Storey of the Brickyards had died in April 1868 aged 43, but son James continued with the business. Roofing tiles made by the Storeys were seldom used in Redmire....slates being the major roofing material to this day in the village. However, some of the Storey tiles were used in the construction of Leyburn Town Hall (*1)

Robert, son of George and Frances had now married Esther Scott....banns were read at Redmire in March of 1862.

1881 Census

Robert Storey's wife Esther, had died in June 1872 and by 1881, Robert had remarried to ?? of Askrigg.

The explanation of first wife Esther's death is probably also explained by the record of baptism of a daughter Frances in the Methodist Chapel on the 2nd June 1872. Frances was born on the 18th May and though she doesn't appear in the above return, neither is there a burial record at Redmire.

George Storey had died in January of 1874.

William, the grandson of Henry and Mary, had finally married in 1874 to Hannah Walker of Redmire, but Hannah was to die before the 1881 census, in January at the age of 27.

Elizabeth, the widow of Henry, had now moved from the Tile Sheds, to one of the cottages at The Swan.

1891 Census

At the vicarage in 1891 was Mary Storey, from one of the Castle Bolton families, at age 16, working as general domestic servant:

1901 Census

At Rose Cottage, now known as `Keeper's Cottage', was John Storey, still a gamekeeper. This cottage, owned until recently by the Bolton Estate, continued as accommodation for Estate gamekeepers.

Redmire Memorials

In loving memory of Esther beloved wife of Robert Storey of Redmire d. 4 Jun 1872 aged 34. Also the above Robert Storey who d. at Bales Farm, Masham 26 Jul 1892 aged 56 & was interred here. Also 3 children who d. in infancy.
