Blades

1861 Census

The first Blades to appear on the census is Christiana and family:

Name Relationship Age Occupation Birthplace
BLADES Christiana Head, Widow 55 Landed Proprietor Redmire
BLADES Christiana Daughter, Unmarried 31 Wensley
BLADES Ann Daughter, Unmarried 29 Wensley
BLADES Isabella Daughter, Unmarried 21 Wensley
WALKER Alice Servant, Unmarried 19 House Servant Wensley

Christiana is the widow of Isaac Blades, whom she married 3 November 1828 in Redmire. At the time of their marriage, Leonard was of Spigot Lodge. Christiana was born Christiana Horner, the child of Leonard Horner and Christiana, baptized in Redmire 22 September 1805, at the same time as her two siblings Leonard and Margaret.

Isaac and Christiana's children were:

  1. Christiana: baptized 1 November 1829 at Wensley
  2. Ann: born 26 November 1831, baptized (unknown)
  3. Elizabeth: baptized 8 June 1834 at Wensley
  4. Margaret Horner: baptized 16 October 1836 at Wensley
  5. Isabella: baptized (unknown)
At the baptism of Christiana, Isaac was noted as being a Training Groom, of Spigot Lodge. By the baptism of Elizabeth, he was still of Spigot Lodge, but servant to the Honorable T.O. Powlett. By the baptism of Margaret Horner, he was a training groom again, perhaps indicating this was his mode of service to Orde-Powlett family.

Their daughter Margaret Horner Blades was buried in Redmire, 10 June 1848 aged 11, and Elizabeth buried 21 May 1850 aged 16. At both burials they were listed as of Richmond. They are buried in Redmire with their parents:

Erected in memory of Isaac Blades late of Spigot Lodge who died 4 March 1842 aged 47 years. Happy in God. Margaret Horner daughter of Isaac and Christiana Blades who died 7 June 1848 aged 11 years. Also Eliza who died 18 May 1850 aged 16 years. Also Christiana widow of the above Isaac Blades who died 26 January 1885 in her 80th year.
