Next is the family of Thomas Peacock. Thomas Peacock was the son of
John Peacockof Leyburn and was baptised at Wensley 6
March 1803. On 19 October 1830 in Redmire he married Isabella Horner.
Isabella was the daughter of Leonard Horner and Christiana, and was baptized 7 April 1801. Here we see them with their young
family:

Thomas and Issabella's children were baptized in Redmire:
- Mary: baptized 25 September 1831
- Christiana: baptized 22 September 1833
- John Horner: baptized 25 September 1836

The next Peacock family is that of Edmund Peacock and Elizabeth:

Edmund was born 7 (or perhaps 14) March 1787 in Redmire, the son of
Edmund Peacock and Isabel Robinson. He was baptized there on 8 April
1787, and married Elizabeth Craddock 1 January 1810. This is the only
time we see his wife Elizabeth on the census, as she died 5 April
1847. Together, they had nine children, including one set of twins,
with birth dates provided by a family bible:
- Edmund: born 22 January 1811, baptized 24 February 1811
- Hannah: born 14 April 1813, baptized 9 May 1813
- Isabella: born 11 April 1815, baptized 14 May 1815

The first Peacock family we see on the 1851 census is that of Edmund
and Ann, Edmund being the son of Edmund and Elizabeth from the
previous census. He married Ann Robinson in February 1842 in Redmire.
Ann was the daughter of James Robinson and Arabella, nee Barras,
baptized 29 April 1810 in Redmire.
Name | Relationship | Age | Occupation | Birthplace |
PEACOCK Edmund | Head | 40 | Lead Miner | Redmire |
PEACOCK Ann | Wife | 41 | | Redmire |
PEACOCK James Robinson | Son | 8 | Scholar | Redmire |

PEACOCK Edmund | Son | 5 | Scholar | Redmire |
PEACOCK John | Son | 3 | | Redmire |
PEACOCK Arabella | Daughter | 1 | | Redmire |
|
Edmund and Ann's children shown are:
- James Robinson: baptized 25 December 1842
- Elizabeth: baptized 7 February 1844
- Edmund: baptized 23 August 1846
- John: baptized 16 April 1848
- Arabella: born 13 September 1849, baptized 11 November 1850
Their first four children were baptized in the church, but Arabella
was baptized at the Methodist chapel, a first sign of the conversion
of many Peacock families shown in the following census.
Next, another lead mining Peacock family is headed by Mark:
Name | Relationship | Age | Occupation | Birthplace |
PEACOCK Mark | Head | 42 | Lead Miner | Redmire |
PEACOCK Mary | Wife | 32 | | West Witton |
PEACOCK Alice | Daughter | 7 | | Redmire |
PEACOCK William | Son | 5 | | Redmire |
PEACOCK Thomas | Son | 1 | | Redmire |
FAWCETT Adam | Lodger, Unmarried | 43 | Lead Ore Smelter | Castle Bolton |
|
Mark was baptized 1 May 1808 in Redmire, the son of Thomas Peacock and
Jane, nee Knowles. In November 1843, he married Mary Sedgewick, the
daughter of William Sedgewick and Elizabeth, nee Wilson. Mary was
baptized at West Witton, 30 November 1817 and probably met Thomas when
a servant for Nicholas Robinson in 1841. Their children are:
- Alice: baptized 1 October 1843. Alice married Thomas Stockdale of
Redmire and eventually emigrated to Ontario, Canada where they died in
Toronto.
- William: baptized 14 May 1845. William became a policeman,
married and lived in Liverpool.
- Thomas: baptized 23 September 1849. Thomas moved first to
Liverpool, married, then emigrated in 1871, first for Ontario, then
Manitoba and is buried in Winnipeg.
In 1851, we again see Thomas and his wife Jane. Thomas is no longer
described as a butcher, but at 81 is now doing manual labour on the
roads.
Name | Relationship | Age | Occupation | Birthplace |
PEACOCK Thomas | Head | 81 | Stone Breaker and Road Labourer | Redmire |

Anthony married Ann Walker in September 1842 in Redmire. Ann,
baptized 2 December 1810, was the daughter of William Walker and
Margaret, nee Horner. Their children shown here are:
- Alice: baptized 16 October 1842
- Elizabeth: baptized 28 April 1844
- William Edmund: baptized 23 August 1846

PEACOCK Michael | Head | 31 | Lead Miner | Castle Bolton |
PEACOCK Ann | Wife | 29 | | Bellerby |
PEACOCK Elizabeth | Daughter | 5 | | Downholm |
PEACOCK Ralph | Son | 3 | | Stainton |
PEACOCK William | Son | 11m | | Redmire |
ROBINSON Christopher | b-in-law, Unmarried | 32 | Lead Miner | Bellerby |
|
Michael was baptized 18 July 1819, the son of Ralph Peacock and
Catherine Constantine. He married Ann in February 1842 in Redmire,
and had four children by 1851, the first three baptized in Downholme,
and William in Redmire:
- Jane: baptized 9 July 1844
- Elizabeth: baptized 12 October 1845
- Ralph: baptized 1 April 1848
- William: baptized 16 June 1850
It seems that Jane did not survive. Edmund Peacock's wife Elizabeth died on 5 April 1847 and was buried in
the Redmire churchyard on 8 April. Their elder children have left home,
leaving Hannah, Thomas and Elizabeth:

The next Peacock family in 1851 is headed by Thomas, who was baptized
6 March 1803 in Wensley, son of John Peacock and Ann Wright. On 19
October 1830, Thomas married Isabella Horner, who was baptized
7 April 1801, the daughter of Leonard Horner and Christiana.

Thomas and Isabella's sons had left home by 1861, but the family has
been joined by William Coates (*), who married their
daughter Christiana in October 1859 in Redmire:

Thomas Peacock, the son of Edmund and Elizabeth has left home and
started a family of his own. He married Jane Robinson in December
1851, the daughter of James Robinson and Arabella Barras, baptized 14
April 1822 (her sister Ann had already married Thomas' brother Edmund).
Name | Relationship | Age | Occupation | Birthplace |
PEACOCK Thomas | Head, Married | 38 | Lead Miner | Redmire |
PEACOCK Jane | wife, Married | 39 | | Redmire |

This Peacock family were methodists, all their children being baptized
in the Redmire chapel:

- Twins Arabella and Elizabeth: born 11 January 1855, baptized 22 January 1855
- William: born 14 May 1857, baptized 25 June 1857
All but one of Edmund's children have left home now. As we noted, the
family of Edmund's son Thomas above was methodist, and here we see
that his father is the preacher at the chapel:
Name | Relationship | Age | Occupation | Birthplace |
PEACOCK Edmund | Head, Widowed | 74 | Lead mine agent, Wesleyan local preacher | Redmire |

on 30 October 1851. His widow Mary is now teaching at the school, and their eldest
son has also gone to the mines.

Edmund had one child by Ann since the last census, baptized at
the methodist chapel like Arabella:
- Mary Jane: born 29 May 1851.
His first wife Ann died 12 May 1856, and on 27 October 1859 in Grinton
he married Jane Harker, daughter of Simon Harker and Ann, baptized 6
December 1819 in Low Row.
Michael Peacock has changed professions, now working as a stonemason (Peacocks
continue in this line of work to this day):

in the parish church:

Edmund Peacock is still going strong in 1871 and his granddaughter
Arabella, one of the twins of his son Thomas, is living with him.
Edmund finally died 15 August 1875, and was buried in the churchyard
on 17 August 1875.

James Robinson Peacock, the son of Edmund and Jane, has left home
to start his own family. In April 1868, he married Judith Lambert,
the daughter of John Lambert and Jane Horn, presumably in a rush!

Jane Peacock appears in this census, living with her daughter's
family:

Jane was born Jane Sunter, the daughter of John Sunter and Alice
Coates, baptized 6 July 1819 in Grinton. She married William Peacock
on 24 September 1839 at Grinton, and their daughter Alice is shown
above married to John Horner. It is interesting that John Horner is
the son of John Horner and Catherine Peacock (the daughter of
Ralph/Catherine Constantine), giving the family a double Peacock
connection: Alice and John were third cousins.
James Peacock, from a Castle Bolton Peacock family, has moved to
Redmire with his new wife:
Name | Relationship | Age | Occupation | Birthplace |
PEACOCK James | Head, Married | 24 | Stone Mason | Redmire |
PEACOCK Mary | wife, Married | 19 | | Melbeck |
CANTRILL Elizabeth | sis-in-law, Unmarried | 21 | | Melbeck |

James is the son of Michael Peacock and Alice Storey, baptized 22
April 1846, and another Peacock stonemason (the corbels on Aysgarth
church and a window in the Leyburn methodist chapel are examples of
his great skill). He married Mary Cantrill, the daughter of Ralph
Cantrill and Elizabeth Harriet Shields. Thomas Peacock died shortly after the last census, and was buried in
Redmire 19 June 1862. His daughter Isabella Horner is still living at
home, with her illegitimate child, George, who was baptized 28 June
1868 with no mention of the father's name (but see the 1881 census for
more detail!). Henrietta married John Smith, and has three small children keeping the household busy:
