Uncertain if young John is the culprit, but one John Mason of Castle Bolton, joiner, was named father of the illegitimate child of Eliza Saville of East Witton at the bastardy sessions in August 1852.

Francis second married to Sarah Chapman, his wife seen above, after banns read in June 1863. Sarah is seen in Hawes in 1851 aged 10 with her grandfather John Chapman. There is a baptism 29 November 1842 at Hawes, illegitimate daughter of Isabella Chapman, that is likely Sarah.
Francis and Sarah's new children are:

Young Heseltine died shortly after the census, aged 14, and was buried in Redmire 18 April 1881.

Francis and Sarah's son John Chapman Mason was buried in Redmire 17 May 1899, aged 34. The register states he died of consumption, and had been a solider in the line, perhaps at the Mahdist War in Sudan (1881-1899).
In 1891, John Chapman was with his half-brother George, living at Throston (nr. Hartlepool), both unemployed greengrocers. Perhaps the lack of employment encouraged John to join the army? George by this time is married, with three children: Heseltine, Francis and William.
The only Mason household in 1901 is the Temperance Hotel, headed by Francis' widow Sarah:
